AUTISM RAINBOWS - EXT. ADVISORY : 4/11/2013

Autism Awareness Extended Advisory

Your advisory class will have a chance to share some positive experiences they have had with students with autism or facts they have learned about autism using the rainbow sheets provided.

Each student should have his or her own rainbow to color in.  Rainbows were chosen in support of the SOAR program (Support Our Autism Rainbow) housed in many of our district schools (including Candlewood) which provides after school opportunities for students with autism to develop social interactions with typically developing students.  There may be students in your class who participate in SOAR.

After coloring the rainbow, teachers should help students to share or brainstorm positive experiences they have had with students with autism or facts they have learned.

PENNY WARS!

 Pennies for Patients Facts
  • Pennies for Patients is a national community service project where students bring their spare change to school and donate it in honor of local student survivors.
  • Last year, 28,000 schools participated and raised over $28 million.
  • Estimates indicate that there is $10.5 billion in loose change sitting idle in American households.
  • Leukemia causes more deaths in children and young adults than any other cancer. Pennies for Patients is working to "change" that statistic.
  • Since its founding, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has invested more than $814 million in blood cancer research.
  • Last year, one state alone raised $1.3 in co-pay assistance and financial aid to 1,351 local patients. Imagine the money raised in all 50 states!

EXTENDED ADVISORY: 2/14/2013

THE PLEDGE (presented to all students on Feb. 13) is an interactive assembly program intended to motivate students to make a positive difference in the world around them with their words, actions, and attitudes.

Everyone faces difficulties in life; we all experience loneliness, frustration, and the pressures to do negative things like drugs, alcohol, smoking, or bullying others.

THE PLEDGE will challenge students to make good decisions and commit to building others up rather than tearing them down. It’s a pledge to be part of the solution – a call to step up and make a difference.

DID YOU KNOW?

More women die of cardiovascular disease than from the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. But 80 percent of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women made the right choices for their hearts involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking. Make it your mission to learn all you can about heart attacks and stroke — don’t become a statistic. CALL 9-1-1

Extended Advisory - 1/17/2013

"I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."               read more:
