First Day of School Advisory

Welcome Back!  I hope your summer was restful and full of fun!  We have outlined below some topics that should be covered during advisory.  As always, I appreciate your assistance in getting the first week of school off to a great start.

1.            Introduce advisory and advisees and describe your role as the advisory teacher:
Students should feel free to speak with Advisory Teachers for many reasons including:
·         Bullying issues
·         Personal Concerns
Remember - teachers can not only listen and help but will also be able to refer students for additional guidance.

2.            Attendance procedures:
·         Lateness:  Explain procedures.
·         Absence:  Explain procedures following absences and the importance of sending by email or bringing an absence note to you. Absence notes are then submitted to the attendance office.
·         Early Dismissal:  Explain that they must bring a signed note from a parent and that the note must be submitted to the teacher before signing out in the Main Office and that students must go to the main office on their own.  They will not be called down.
·         Note the importance of arriving to school on time (barring bus problems).  They must be in advisory by 7:50am and that advisory is technically the first period of the day that sets the tone for the remainder of the day.
·         All attendance information is available on Infinite Campus.
·         Parents can view lates and absences from home on the parent portal.

(NOT SO) EXTENDED ADVISORY - 6/7/2013

I know there were some concerns with the limited amount of days left in the year and the shortened schedules we are having over the next few days.  Taking this into consideration, we are going to have a 10 min extended advisory on Friday rather than a full extended advisory.  Students will be in advisory from 7:50 until 8:10 and students will just miss 10 minutes of period 1.
For 6th and 7th grade advisory teachers this will be your last time with your students so it will be a chance to celebrate the year.  All 8th grade advisory teachers need to take their students to the auditorium to discuss end of the year events (graduation, end of the year party, etc.)

Students have been assigned for each 6th and 7th grade advisory to help present information about Malala.

8th grade advisory teachers should refer to the J. Haase e-board.  There are a few video clips, a link to the Malala Fund site, and a handout.  There are also discussion questions on the back of the sheet.

AUTISM RAINBOWS - EXT. ADVISORY : 4/11/2013

Autism Awareness Extended Advisory

Your advisory class will have a chance to share some positive experiences they have had with students with autism or facts they have learned about autism using the rainbow sheets provided.

Each student should have his or her own rainbow to color in.  Rainbows were chosen in support of the SOAR program (Support Our Autism Rainbow) housed in many of our district schools (including Candlewood) which provides after school opportunities for students with autism to develop social interactions with typically developing students.  There may be students in your class who participate in SOAR.

After coloring the rainbow, teachers should help students to share or brainstorm positive experiences they have had with students with autism or facts they have learned.
